O-xylene

O-xylene, also known as 1,2-dimethylbenzene, is a colorless, sweet-smelling liquid that belongs to the group of aromatic hydrocarbons. It is one of the three isomers of xylene, alongside m-xylene and p-xylene. O-xylene is primarily used as a solvent in various industrial processes, including in the production of phthalic anhydride, which is a precursor for the manufacture of plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Additionally, it serves as a raw material in the synthesis of chemicals like dimethyl terephthalate and isophthalic acid, both of which are essential in the production of polyester resins. O-xylene is also utilized in the manufacturing of dyes, paints, and pesticides. While it has numerous industrial applications, exposure to o-xylene vapor can pose health risks, including irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as neurological effects such as headache, dizziness, and nausea. Consequently, proper handling and ventilation are essential when working with this compound.
